Ausbildung without the baccalaureate: what is genuinely open to Moroccans

Yes, an Ausbildung is still possible without the baccalaureate: German law sets no school-leaving requirement for most trades. Two details decide everything though — the three-year nursing route stays closed, and the middle-school certificate nobody asks you for can open one more door, case by case and only once an employer has committed in writing.

What is genuinely open without the baccalaureate

German law attaches no school-leaving condition to the vast majority of apprenticeship trades. The BIBB's 2026 register of recognised Ausbildung occupations lists 324 of them, and in most cases the Kammer registers the contract without ever checking a certificate. The barrier is not legal, it is commercial: companies are the ones asking for the Mittlere Reife in their job ads.

So the right question is not «which trade accepts candidates without the bac», but «which employer does not ask for it». Start where places most often stay open: cleaning and building crafts, hotels and catering, logistics, technical trades and mechatronics. Health care comes after, and only through the three trades with no schooling condition described below.

One exception is clear-cut: regulated professions. The three-year Pflegefachfrau/-mann falls under § 11 PflBG, which does not require the German Abitur but a mittlerer Schulabschluss, an equivalent certificate, or ten years of general schooling completed with a certificate. Morocco issues no certificate at the end of the Tronc Commun: without the baccalaureate or another recognised qualification, the direct route into the three-year training stays shut — and the school checks before the employer does.

The certificate you already hold and nobody asks for

The Moroccan middle-school certificate, covering nine years of schooling, is often the only diploma a candidate without the bac holds — and nobody asks for it, because everyone is looking for the baccalaureate. It is the first document to pull out, sworn-translated like any other.

The Bezirksregierung Köln, Dezernat 48, can recognise it as an Erster Schulabschluss, case by case: no blanket decision covers it. That recognition can open § 11 Abs. 1 Nr. 2 lit. b PflBG — an assistant training in care, whose length is set by the Land, plus a recognised certificate, both cumulative. It removes one condition among several; it does not open the training on its own.

One sequencing point worth three months of your time: from abroad, the Bezirksregierung requires a berechtigtes Interesse, a legitimate interest. Recognition therefore comes after a written commitment from an employer, never before. The company first, the recognition second.

Pull out any OFPPT or ISTA certificate as well. A two-year vocational qualification is the second branch of the same article, § 11 Abs. 1 Nr. 2 lit. a: it is worth submitting and having examined, but equivalence is assessed case by case, never in advance.

Three health trades open with no school certificate at all

Three routes set no schooling condition. First, Medizinische Fachangestellte (MFA) and Zahnmedizinische Fachangestellte (ZFA): neither the BBiG nor the MedFAngAusbV imposes a certificate, the Kammer registers the contract without checking one, and the Zahnärztekammer Nordrhein states it plainly — «Ein bestimmter Schulabschluss ist keine Voraussetzung».

The third is Pflegefachassistenz, entered through an Eignungsprognose issued by the school. In North Rhine-Westphalia it is also the only care route that opens below B2: everywhere else — Pflegefachmann, OTA, ATA, Notfallsanitäter — schools require a proper B2 certificate. Its length is set by the Land: get it confirmed in writing before you build a budget.

From 01.01.2027, § 10 Abs. 2 PflFAssG turns that Eignungsprognose into a federal right across all 16 Länder. Before that date it rests on the PflfachassAPrV and on each Bezirksregierung's practice, so treat anyone presenting it as a settled right with caution.

One last barrier remains, no longer legal but commercial: large employers such as KfH or PHV ask for the Mittlere Reife in their MFA adverts. The law requires no certificate, they do — so apply first where the advert asks for none, and answer honestly when a form or a recruiter asks.

Outside health care: trades where the certificate is not the obstacle

Professional cleaning is the most underrated route on the market. Gebäudereiniger/in is a three-year craft Ausbildung with no schooling requirement at all and a severe shortage of applicants; Textilreiniger/in works the same way. Coming from a kitchen background, the best bridge is Hauswirtschafter/in, which covers meal preparation alongside cleaning and laundry.

In metalwork, correct a very common error straight away: «Schweißer» is not an apprenticeship trade. Welding is a Weiterbildung certified by a Schweißerpass under DIN EN ISO 9606, renewable every two to three years — no Kammer registers a contract under that name. The defensible title is Fachkraft für Metalltechnik, Fachrichtung Konstruktionstechnik, two years.

Two costly dead ends to finish. Rettungshelfer (160 h) and Rettungssanitäter (520 h) are not Ausbildungen: the course is paid for by the candidate and carries no salary. And Kfz-Mechatroniker attracts far more apprenticeship applicants than there are places: a trade in demand on the job market is not necessarily an easy training place to win.

  • Gebäudereiniger/in — 3 years, craft trade, no school certificate required
  • Textilreiniger/in — same logic, likewise no school certificate required
  • Hauswirtschafter/in — meal preparation, cleaning and laundry combined
  • Fachkraft für Metalltechnik, Fachrichtung Konstruktionstechnik — 2 years, welding included
  • Medizinische and Zahnmedizinische Fachangestellte — no schooling condition
  • Pflegefachassistenz — through the school's Eignungsprognose

If you do have the bac, it is worth more than you think — but not everywhere

The Bezirksregierung Köln's Allgemeinverfügung, version of 15.06.2026, grants the Moroccan baccalaureate the value of the mittlerer Schulabschluss, in allen Fachrichtungen ohne Notenspiegel. Neither the stream nor the grades are examined, and no application is needed: the effect is automatic. Almost no candidate knows this.

You still have to be able to prove it, because nobody on the other side will guess the text exists. Keep together the diploma, its sworn translation, and a printout of the PDF Informationsschreiben + Allgemeinverfügung + Anlage 1, public and free from the Bezirksregierung Köln. Do not staple it to an application — an employer file stays short — but offer to send it on request: it is in front of the school or the consulate that it counts.

One boundary not to cross: the text applies to North Rhine-Westphalia only. Attaching it to a Bavarian application binds Bavaria in no way. The fallback that works everywhere is § 11 Abs. 1 Nr. 3 PflBG, sonstige zehnjährige allgemeine Schulbildung, which a Moroccan baccalaureate obtained over twelve years satisfies.

University is a different matter: the bac alone gives no direct access but leads to the Studienkolleg, unless you have completed one or two years of higher education, a Licence or a Master. Without the baccalaureate the university route is closed. And to clear up a common confusion: the APS procedure does not exist for Morocco, it targets China, India and Vietnam.

What no certificate replaces: language and budget

B1 is the legal minimum for the Ausbildung visa. The B2 asked for in health trades and customer-facing roles is not a visa condition: schools and employers are the ones requiring it. University requires C1, through TestDaF, DSH or telc C1 Hochschule. A self-assessed level never passes: you need a Goethe, telc or ÖSD certificate.

In Morocco, budget roughly 3 000 MAD per level of Goethe-Institut classes, 2 500 MAD for the B1 exam and 2 800 MAD for B2 — check the prices before enrolling. Without a certificate no file moves forward: it is the first expense to take on, ahead of every other.

On the income side, the statutory minimum apprentice pay is 724 € a month in the first year in 2026, and it rises with each year of training. The widely quoted average of around 1 133 € gross covers every trade and every training year: it is not what a first-year apprentice receives.

Mind the blocked account: in a company-based Ausbildung, subsistence counts as covered from 1 048 € gross, i.e. 822 € net per month — two ways of writing the same threshold. Below it you do not block the whole amount, you cover the difference, through a Sperrkonto or a Verpflichtungserklärung from a guarantor in Germany, and housing provided free or at a reduced rate by the employer counts towards the calculation. Mind the reading: job ads publish gross pay, so never compare a gross amount to the 822 € net threshold. The 992 € net threshold, i.e. 11 904 € blocked for the year, applies to the study route only. The national D visa costs 75 €, filing in Rabat goes through TLScontact, and the 411 € of the accelerated procedure under § 81a AufenthG are owed by the candidate, unless the company covers them through a written Kostenübernahmeerklärung.

Promises to turn down, however tempting

No intermediary guarantees a visa, a contract or an admission: the decision belongs to the German authorities, the schools and the employers. What serious support owes you is work — an obligation of means — never an outcome.

Three sentences should end the call: «guaranteed contract», «we will get you into three-year nursing without a certificate», «pay cash, no written contract». The second is the most dangerous, because it is technically false and only surfaces after payment, when the school asks for the certificate.

Key facts

Figures verified on 08/20/2026

  • The BIBB's 2026 register lists 324 recognised Ausbildung occupations in Germany, and for the vast majority no school-leaving certificate is legally required: the filter comes from employers, not from the law.
  • § 11 PflBG requires no Abitur but a mittlerer Schulabschluss or an equivalent qualification; since Morocco issues no certificate at the end of the Tronc Commun, three-year nursing training is not directly accessible without the baccalaureate.
  • With no school certificate at all, three health trades remain open — MFA, ZFA and Pflegefachassistenz — the last being the only care route in North Rhine-Westphalia accessible below level B2.
  • The subsistence threshold for a company-based Ausbildung is 1 048 € gross, i.e. 822 € net per month: below it the difference has to be covered by a Sperrkonto or a Verpflichtungserklärung — and the statutory first-year minimum pay, 724 € gross a month in 2026, sits below it.

Common questions

Can you do an Ausbildung without the baccalaureate from Morocco?

Yes, for the vast majority of trades. German law does not tie the apprenticeship contract to a school certificate, and the Kammer registers it without checking one. The restriction is commercial, not legal — many adverts ask for the Mittlere Reife. The clear exception is the three-year Pflegefachfrau/-mann under § 11 PflBG.

Which trades accept a candidate with no school certificate at all?

In health: Medizinische Fachangestellte (MFA), Zahnmedizinische Fachangestellte (ZFA) and Pflegefachassistenz, the latter through the school's Eignungsprognose. Outside health: Gebäudereiniger/in (3 years), Textilreiniger/in, Hauswirtschafter/in, or Fachkraft für Metalltechnik, Fachrichtung Konstruktionstechnik (2 years). The choice follows your real profile, not a list.

Is my Moroccan middle-school certificate of any use?

Yes, and it is the most frequently forgotten diploma. The Bezirksregierung Köln can recognise the Moroccan middle-school certificate as an Erster Schulabschluss, case by case. That recognition can open § 11 Abs. 1 Nr. 2 lit. b PflBG, together with an assistant training in care. From abroad it is granted only after a written commitment from an employer.

What German level do you need without the baccalaureate?

B1 is the legal minimum for the Ausbildung visa. The B2 asked for in care and customer-facing trades comes from schools and employers, not from the visa. You need an official Goethe, telc or ÖSD certificate: in Morocco budget around 3 000 MAD per course level, 2 500 MAD for the B1 exam and 2 800 MAD for B2 — check the prices first.

Without the baccalaureate, can I study at a German university?

No. The university route assumes a baccalaureate, which first leads to the Studienkolleg, plus a C1 level certified by TestDaF, DSH or telc C1 Hochschule. Ausbildung therefore remains the realistic path. One confusion to clear: the APS procedure does not exist for Morocco, it concerns China, India and Vietnam.
