What German Level Do You Need for an Ausbildung? B1 for the Visa, B2 to Cope

For an Ausbildung, the German level required in your visa file is B1. That is a legal minimum, not a comfortable level: the Berufsschule runs 100% in German, with technical vocabulary closer to B2. Filing with B1 is possible; reaching B2 before departure is what makes the first year survivable.

B1 for the visa, B2 to cope: the short answer

The level required in an Ausbildung visa file is B1. Nothing more. But that is an administrative threshold, not a comfort level: the company interviews you, often by video call, and the vocational school teaches in German only. So the sensible target remains B2, even though B1 already lets you file the application.

The gap between the two is not academic, it is daily. At B1 you understand simple instructions and make yourself understood. At B2 you follow a meeting, read a technical manual and ask a question without building the sentence first. That second level is what an employer expects after a few months.

Any agency promising an Ausbildung with no German at all is selling something that does not exist. The language certificate is part of the file submitted to the consulate, and in practice a German company does not sign an apprenticeship contract without having spoken to the candidate.

Why the Berufsschule changes the whole calculation

An Ausbildung is a dual programme: you work in a company and attend classes at a Berufsschule. Those classes are not German lessons. They are trade lessons delivered in German, with written exams sat before the chamber of crafts or the chamber of commerce.

That is where B1 shows its limits. The vocabulary of a nursing, logistics or mechatronics class is not the vocabulary of a language textbook. Many candidates leave at B1 and catch up on site, which is doable, but the first year absorbs the whole shock.

Time once you arrive is thinner than people imagine: days in the company, days at school, paperwork, finding housing. Every level gained before departure is a level you will not have to catch up on in the evening after a full working day.

What reaching B1 actually costs, in MAD

At the Goethe-Institut, one course level costs around 3,000 MAD, and the exam is paid separately: 2,500 MAD for B1, 2,800 MAD for B2. These are Goethe-Institut prices as recorded in 2026, to be checked again with the Goethe-Institut in Casablanca or Rabat; telc and ÖSD set their own fees. On top of that, a level is often split into sub-modules such as A1.1 and A1.2, billed separately, which pushes the total up.

Put that budget against what it prevents. A file submitted with a weak certificate, or an interview lost for lack of vocabulary, costs far more than one extra course level: months lost, and sometimes visa fees paid for nothing.

  • A1, then A2, then B1: three course levels, from 9,000 MAD upwards, more if they are split into sub-modules
  • Goethe-Zertifikat B1 exam: 2,500 MAD
  • So from 11,500 MAD upwards for a certified B1 starting from zero, excluding sub-modules and retakes
  • Carrying on to B2: one more course level, plus 2,800 MAD for the exam
  • The exam is sat at the level you target: you can take B1 without holding an A1 or A2 certificate
  • Goethe-Institut prices as recorded in 2026: check with the institute before fixing your budget

How long it takes, honestly

Nobody can promise you a timeline: it depends on your class rhythm, on the work you put in outside class, and on your starting point. What is certain is that a level does not close in a few weeks. In class the path runs through A1, A2 and then B1; the exam, however, is sat at the level you target — you can take B1 without holding an A1 or A2 certificate, which also changes the budget for self-taught learners.

What genuinely speeds things up: regular classes rather than one isolated intensive course, daily listening, and above all speaking. The interview with the employer is decided by oral confidence, not written grammar.

What slows things down: starting German only after looking for a company. German employers select their apprentices months before the intake, and a candidate with no certificate at interview time comes after the others. German goes first, not last.

Nursing (Pflege): B2 required, with a single door below it

In nursing, B2 is not advice, it is a condition — but a condition set by the nursing schools and by employers, not by the visa, which stops at B1. The Pflege training requires B2 together with the Fachsprachenprüfung, the professional language exam, and nursing schools check that level before an employer even makes a decision.

One route only opens below B2, in North Rhine-Westphalia: the Pflegefachassistenz. There the school may replace the B2 certificate with an Eignungsprognose, an aptitude forecast confirmed by the regional authority. Everywhere else in nursing, the certificate is required. For MFA and ZFA, by contrast, no legal text sets a language level at all: the school and the employer decide, and they often ask for more than the visa minimum.

Something rarely said plainly: German law does not require the baccalaureate to enter the Pflegefachfrau or Pflegefachmann training, but a school-leaving qualification at mittlerer Schulabschluss level or equivalent. What it does not accept is years of schooling attended with no qualification at the end — and Morocco awards none at the end of the tronc commun. Without a qualification, the full training is therefore not directly accessible; a cumulative route remains, one year of assistant training plus a recognised Hauptschulabschluss. Three health-sector programmes also stay open with no school qualification at all: Pflegefachassistenz, MFA and ZFA.

Language still remains the hardest condition on those routes. For scale, in Pflege the apprentice pay in the first year is between 1,340 and 1,490 € gross depending on the collective agreement (TVAöD-P / TVöD, as of 01.05.2026); in MFA, ZFA or assistant training it is set differently and appears in the contract you are offered. The blocked account, in turn, is assessed on net resources: it is no longer required from 992 € net per month onwards, and a gross figure does not settle the question.

Studies, Chancenkarte, skilled work: different thresholds

For a university degree taught in German, the bar rises to C1, evidenced by a TestDaF or a DSH. The Studienkolleg, the preparatory year, sets its own language conditions college by college: check the required level with the one you are targeting, not in a guide. Financially, the student blocked account is set at 11,904 €/year.

The Chancenkarte, the opportunity card, asks far less in German: A1 is enough, and English at B2 is accepted instead. In exchange you need at least 6 points on the scale and proof of roughly 13,092 €/year in resources.

The EU Blue Card sets no language threshold at all, but a salary one: 48,300 € in 2025 and 50,700 € in 2026, lowered to 43,759.80 € then 45,934.20 € in shortage occupations. German becomes an employer requirement there, not a regulatory one.

One confusion worth correcting straight away: the APS pre-verification procedure for diplomas does not exist for Morocco. It applies to China, India and Vietnam. An intermediary charging you for a Moroccan APS is charging for a procedure that does not exist.

A certificate, never a feeling

The consulate does not read a self-declared level: it reads a certificate issued by the Goethe-Institut, telc, ÖSD, or a TestDaF depending on the route. Submission happens in Rabat, compulsorily through TLScontact, and the national visa costs 75 €.

First trap: a results statement is not a certificate. When an exam is sat module by module and one module is not passed, the sheet you receive lists scores. It does not stand in for the level certificate, and its validity is usually short.

Second trap: claiming a level on a CV that the attachment contradicts. A German recruiter opens both documents side by side. It is better to write exactly what was passed, with the scores, than to claim a level the certificate does not carry.

One last practical point: once a company hires you, it can launch the accelerated procedure under § 81a, which aims at a submission appointment in Rabat in about three weeks; no timeline is guaranteed. Be careful what you are told: the 411 € for that procedure are owed by the candidate, not the employer, unless the employer commits in writing.

Key facts

Figures verified on 08/20/2026

  • The German level required for the Ausbildung visa is B1: a legal minimum, not a comfortable level.
  • The Berufsschule runs 100% in German, so reaching B2 before departure is what makes the first year manageable.
  • Going from zero to a certified B1 costs from 11,500 MAD upwards at the Goethe-Institut: 3,000 MAD per course level for A1, A2 and B1, plus 2,500 MAD for the exam — 2026 prices, to be checked.
  • In nursing, B2 with the Fachsprachenprüfung is required by the schools and the employers, not by the visa; in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Pflegefachassistenz is the only nursing programme accessible below B2.
  • Studying in German requires C1, evidenced by a TestDaF or a DSH, while the Chancenkarte only asks for A1 in German or B2 in English.

Common questions

Can you do an Ausbildung without speaking German?

As a general rule, no. The B1 certificate is part of the visa file, and the company runs an interview, usually by video, before signing any contract. Anyone promising an Ausbildung “without German” is promising something that does not exist.

Is B1 really enough?

Legally yes, it is the minimum for the visa. In practice the Berufsschule teaches the trade 100% in German with vocabulary close to B2, and the final exams are written. B1 meets the language requirement in the visa file; B2 is what carries you through the training. The consulate decides, not the file.

How much does B1 cost in Morocco?

At the Goethe-Institut, around 3,000 MAD per course level and 2,500 MAD for the B1 exam, so from 11,500 MAD upwards from zero through A1, A2 and B1 — more if a level is split into sub-modules. The B2 exam costs 2,800 MAD. 2026 prices, to be checked; telc and ÖSD apply their own fees.

Which certificate is accepted for the visa?

An official certificate from the Goethe-Institut, telc or ÖSD, or a TestDaF depending on the route. Note that a results statement, issued when one exam module was not passed, is not a level certificate and does not replace one.

How do I know which level to aim for?

It depends on the occupation, the route and the diplomas you already hold: Ausbildung, university and the Chancenkarte do not share the same threshold. The free diagnostic takes a few minutes, and you can send us your specific question on WhatsApp.
